PHYSICIAN RECRUITMENT PROGRAM

Hastings County developed the Family Physician Recruitment Program in 2006 to help ease the family doctor shortage that was

being experienced across the 14 member municipalities of Hastings County.

MEDICAL SCHOOL STUDENTS &

PRACTICING PHYSICIANS

The program pays $150,000 over 5 years to medical students or residents of a Canadian Medical School, or recent graduates who have not yet begun their practice, in exchange for providing a minimum of 5-years of service practicing family medicine in one of the 14 member municipalities of Hastings County when they begin to practice.

There is also a new, separate incentive that pays $75,000 over 5 years to physicians that are currently practicing in Canada or internationally and are licensed to practice family medicine in Ontario, who relocate and practice full-time family medicine in Hastings County.

Since its inception, 25 doctors have signed through the program, and 20 are still practicing across Hastings County.

Emergency Room PHYSICIANS

Hastings County also has an incentive to support two new Full-Time Emergency Room Physicians at the North Hastings (Bancroft) Hospital. Hastings County will provide $150,000 paid over 5 years, to a physician to provide full-time emergency room coverage at the Bancroft Hospital for a minimum of 5-years return-of-service. Frequently Asked Questions

No, unfortunately, our program is open to medical students and residents in a Canadian Medical School. However, if you complete medical school outside of Canada and do your residency in Canada you would qualify.

No, Hastings County’s program requires the setting up of a family medicine practice in one of our 14 member municipalities. While Belleville and Quinte West are located within Hastings County, they are separated cities and not eligible.

Yes! As long as you practice for a minimum of 5 years after being licensed in one of our 14 member municipalities you are eligible for the program and we would love to have you here.

The program does not cover specialists, but the program has been expanded to support full-time emergency room physicians at the Bancroft Hospital.

Yes! Hastings County program is separate from any provincial incentives, including the Northern, Rural and Remote Recruitment Incentive (NRRRI) which is available to physicians who set up their practice in most of our member municipalities.
